What makes touch controls good in a strategy game

A strategy game can have brilliant systems and still fail on mobile because you can't reliably tap the thing you meant to tap. Controls are half the review for me.

Good games give generous hit areas, clear selection feedback and a sensible way to zoom. Pinch-to-zoom that fights you is an instant frustration.

Portrait support is a bonus I've come to value. Being able to play one-handed on a crowded train changes how often a game gets opened.

When I review, I test the fiddly moments: multi-unit selection, quick retargeting mid-fight, cancelling a misclick. Those small things decide whether a game survives on my phone.
